Subject: why there are different types of antenna towers?
Question: police dept use microwave towers, bus transport has a diff antenna, while telephones use another and moble towers are diff altogether. why cant the age old tv antenna receive signals from dth signals? coming from satellites.

different antennas are used because of various range of frequencies needed for the transmission of signals, for police dept and the mobile companies its a high frequency and high quality antennas used, where as old t.v antennas had a low quality and now it can't receive the signal from satellites as it doesn't posses the receiver for the new signals that the satellite sends. along with the frequencies the distance also matters, the only powerful antennas can catch such signals.

It depends on the type of signal ---- frequency, gain required, radiation pattern, band width, polarisation , effect of ground etc. The receiving antennas are also different from transmitting antennas
